24 HOUR AMBULATORY BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORING
A 24 Hour Blood Pressure Monitor is a device that will monitor your blood pressure over a 24-hour period. It is the ‘gold standard’ in diagnosing hypertension and is also used to monitor the effectiveness of medication. It is worn during regular daily activities under regular clothing.
Blood pressure monitoring is extremely safe and no different than carrying around a small recorder for 24 hours.
It is recommended that you wear a top with loose fitting sleeves as a blood pressure cuff is attached to your arm and it will be attached to the main unit, which is on a belt around your waist.
The machine is programmed prior to putting it on you, with all of your details. The ABPM will do an initial reading then a reading every 30 minutes until 10pm, then every 60 minutes whilst you are sleeping until 7am and then back to every 30 minutes until you return to the clinic 24 hours after the monitor was put on.
It will take approximately 15 minutes to apply the blood pressure monitor.
The monitor is not waterproof so you cannot have a shower or bath until the monitor is removed. Please ensure you have a shower prior to attending the clinic.
Once the monitor is returned the test will be reported on and a report will be sent to the referring GP as soon as possible.
